Baja in a GH1: Adventure, Connection, and Working from the Edge of the Map

The Moment It Clicked

The first time I opened the rear doors of my GH1 to the Sea of Cortez, I knew this trip was going to be something different.

No hookups. No campground. Just the sound of water, a light breeze coming through the van, and a view that didn’t feel real. It’s one thing to talk about “freedom on the road” – it’s another to actually experience it somewhere like Baja, where the road quite literally runs out and the adventure begins.

Why Baja, and Why the GH1

Baja had been on my list for a long time. The combination of rugged coastline, remote beaches, and a slower pace of life makes it feel like a different world – while still being surprisingly accessible from the U.S.

But the destination is only part of the story.

Choosing the right rig matters just as much, and for this trip, my GH1 turned out to be exactly what Baja demands: compact, capable, and ready for anything.

There’s a certain confidence that comes from knowing you can turn down that unmarked dirt road – and keep going.

Crossing the Border: Easier Than Expected

If you’ve never driven into Mexico, it can feel like the biggest hurdle of the entire trip.

In reality, it was one of the smoother parts.

A bit of preparation, the right paperwork, and a willingness to embrace the unknown go a long way. Within a short time, I was on the other side – heading south with a mix of excitement and curiosity about what was ahead.

And once you’re in Baja, things slow down in the best possible way.

Life in Baja: Where the GH1 Shines

Baja isn’t built around RV parks – it’s built around possibility.

Beachfront Living

Where the road ends and beachfront living begins.

Off the Beaten Path

The real magic of Baja is found where the pavement ends.

Agua Verde was, without question, the highlight of the trip.

Getting there requires navigating rugged mountainous terrain, narrow paths, and long stretches of isolation – but that’s exactly what makes it unforgettable. The reward? Crystal-clear water, dramatic mountains, and a sense that you’ve found something truly special.

Agua Verde – Worth every mile of the journey.

The GH1 handled it all with confidence. Its size and maneuverability made it possible to reach places that would be far more challenging in a larger rig.

Community on the Road

One of the most unexpected highlights was connecting with other GH1 owners along the way.

There’s something unique about meeting people who not only share your travel style, but are experiencing the same journey in similar rigs. Conversations come easy, tips get exchanged, and before you know it, you’ve formed a small community in the middle of Baja.

Baja sunsets are even better when shared with fellow GH1 travelers.

Working from Baja in a GH1

If you want to see exactly how I stayed connected and worked remotely from Baja, I documented my setup and experience in this video:

For me, this trip wasn’t just about disconnecting – it was about proving that you don’t have to.

I run a business, lead projects, and stay connected with clients. That doesn’t stop just because I’m parked on a remote beach.

My setup is built around redundancy and stability – because when you’re working remotely, reliability matters more than anything:

In most environments, that redundancy is critical.

It was no surprise to me, but Starlink became the real MVP of the trip. With wide open skies and minimal obstructions, it was rare to not have a clear connection. Video calls, file uploads, and day-to-day work all continued without issue – even in places that felt completely off the grid.

It changed how I think about what’s possible while traveling.

I share more real-world setups, upgrades, and experiences from the road on YouTube if you’re interested in seeing how this all comes together in practice.

Lessons Learned Along the Way

No trip like this comes without a few takeaways:

Why the GH1 Just Works in Baja

After spending weeks exploring Baja, one thing became clear: the GH1 feels purpose-built for this kind of adventure.

It strikes a balance that’s hard to fully appreciate until you actually put it to the test somewhere like this.

More Than a Destination

Baja isn’t just a place you visit – it’s a place that shifts your perspective.

It reminds you that you don’t need much to feel completely content. That the best views aren’t always marked on a map. And that work, life, and adventure don’t have to be separate things.

Sometimes, they all come together in one place – at the edge of the map, with the doors open and nowhere else you need to be.
